‘Following the judgment of the UK General Medical Council\u2019s Fitness to Practise Panel on Jan 28, 2010, it has become clear that several elements of the 1998 paper by Wakefield are incorrect, contrary to the findings of an earlier investigation. In particular, the claims in the original paper that children were \u201cconsecutively referred\u201d and that investigations were \u201capproved\u201d by the local ethics committee have been proven to be false. Dr. Wakefield identified the gut\/brain correlation in children with Autism<\/a> all of whom received the MMR vaccine at 12 – 15 months (Inflammatory Bowel Disease a major common denominator). By treating the immunological intolerance of gluten, removing it from the diet, the bowel symptoms got better but also the behavioral symptoms got better. Primary Treatment: 1) Fibre mini Salicylates (plant based anti inflammatory) 2) Gluten Casein free diet (elimination of milk, wheat, rye barley, yeast intake).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gluten is the protein in wheat, barley, rye, oats and their derivatives: malt, grain starches, hydrolysed vegetable\/plant proteins, textured vegetable proteins, grain vinegar, grain alcohol, malt, modified food starch, caramel, maltodextrin, soy sauce, flavourings and the binders found in medication. Since the texture of gluten is elastic it also appears in many processed foods as well as in the gum substance on envelopes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Casein is the protein found in dairy products. It is present in small quantities in bread, processed cereals, instant soups, instant potatoes, margarine, salad dressings, sweets and mixes for cakes. Casein is also found in some medication, including the pill or stomach tablets.

Wakefield’s 1998 study demonstrated “anti-myelin antibodies and digestive tract pathologies in children with autism after being given the MMR vaccine.” Dr. Rebecca Carley<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Findings: Onset of behavioural symptoms was associated, by the parents, with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination in eight of the 12 children, with measles infection in one child, and otitis media in another. All 12 children had intestinal abnormalities, ranging from lymphoid nodular hyperplasia to aphthoid ulceration. Histology showed patchy chronic inflammation in the colon in 11 children and reactive ileal lymphoid hyperplasia in seven, but no granulomas. Behavioural disorders included autism (nine), disintegrative psychosis (one), and possible postviral or vaccinal encephalitis (two).<\/strong><\/p>\n

STATEMENT FROM DR. ANDREW WAKEFIELD REGARDING THE GMC HEARING SANCTIONS<\/strong> –

\"Wakefield“On Wednesday April 7th, General Medical Council (GMC) lawyers will demand that I and likely two other doctors involved in the MMR-autism case should be erased from the UK\u2019s medical register, removing our license to practice medicine. Doctors\u2019 regulators have found the three of us – Professor John Walker-Smith, Professor Simon Murch and me – guilty of undertaking research on children with autism without approval from an ethics committee.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

We can prove, with extensive documentary evidence, that this conclusion is false.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me make it absolutely clear that, at its heart, the GMC hearing has been about the protection of MMR vaccination policy. The case has been driven by an agenda to crush dissent that in my opinion serves the government and the pharmaceutical industry \u2014 not the welfare of children. It\u2019s important to note that there has never been a complaint against any of the doctors by any parent involved in this case \u2014 only universal parental support and gratitude.

My colleagues, Professors Walker-Smith and Murch, are outstanding pediatricians and pediatric gastroenterologists. They have led the field of pediatric gastroenterology for decades, devoting their lives to caring for sick children. Our only \u201ccrime\u201d in this matter has been to listen to the concerns of parents, act according to the demands of our professional training, and provide appropriate care to this neglected population of children. It is unthinkable that at the end of an unimpeachable career, Professor Walker-Smith would even consider unethical experimentation on children under his care.
\nIn the course of our work, we discovered and treated a new intestinal disease syndrome in children with autism, alleviating suffering in affected children around the world. This should be cause for celebration. Instead, we have been vilified in the press, and demonized by a wasteful PR campaign by the Department of Health. The aim of this negative publicity was to discredit my criticism of vaccine safety research.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sadly, my colleagues have suffered severe collateral damage in this effort to prevent valid scientific enquiry. They should be exonerated, and left alone with their reputations intact, in the certain knowledge that they have done only what is right.

The loss of my own medical license is, unfortunately, the cost of doing business. Although I do not take this loss lightly, the suffering – so much of it unnecessary – that I have seen among those affected by this devastating disease makes the professional consequences for me a small price to pay by comparison.

UPDATE: New independent research presented at the 2010 Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada confirms unequivocally the findings of Dr Andrew Wakefield\u2019s 1998 Lancet paper of an association between autism and serious gastrointestinal disease in children.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new study was conducted by the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network and covered data from 15 treatment and research centers in the United States and Canada.\u00a0 Of 1185 children aged 2 to18 years with an autistic condition 45% were reported to have GI symptoms. Abdominal pain was most common (59%) followed by constipation (51%), diarrhea (43%), other (40%), nausea (31%) and bloating (26%). Reports of GI symptoms increased with age.\u00a0 Sleep problems occurred in 70% of children with than those without GI symptoms (30%).\u00a0 The problems affected all children regardless of gender, ethnic background or intelligence.

The prosecution is calling for Drs Wakefield and Walker-Smith to be struck from the medical register and for Dr Murch to be suspended. This is despite increasing dissent from the medical community and testimony from parents of the Lancet 12 children that these doctors acted professionally and caringly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No parent has ever complained to the GMC about the three doctors. Yet, based on one journalist\u2019s complaint, the GMC brought a case against the doctors claiming that research published in The Lancet in 1998 (a case series of 12 children with autism and bowel disease) did not have appropriate ethical approval, that they used the wrong diagnoses to select children for the research and subjected children to invasive procedures not clinically needed. Without regard for academic freedom, the doctors were also blamed for having published research that undermined public health policy supporting MMR vaccine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The GMC based its case on the erroneous claim that the three authors of the Lancet article failed to follow the terms of the ethical approval granted by the Royal Free Hospital in 1996 (approval 172-96). Yet it is clear from the research programme described in approval 172-96 that it was written after the Lancet research was first carried out (1995-96), and that 172-96 was not the relevant approval for the Lancet case series. The GMC based its unjust case against the doctors on the wrong ethical approval. The three doctors claim that the correct ethical approval was granted in 1995 not 1996. Because of this gross injustice the doctors will most likely lose their right to practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The GMC is determined to silence these doctors and ensure they never practice or research again and that they are severely punished for publishing papers that the GMC claim encouraged public criticism of vaccine policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

MMR VACCINE TIMELINE: The measles-mumps-rubella vaccination was introduced to Britain in 1988. Its original introduction was seriously marred by adverse reaction to the Urabi mumps strain in the vaccination. It was not until 1992 that the Department of Health, downplaying the serious adverse events that had occurred using this particular strain, took two of the MMR vaccines off the market while making low-key and somewhat mumbled explanations to the public. <\/strong><\/p>\n

NOTE: <\/strong> High Court Judge Sir Nigel Davis<\/a>, who led the GMC panel targeting Wakefield, is brother to Sir Crispin Davis; a shocking conflict of interest which was covered up during Sir Davis’s tenure at GSK. <\/strong><\/p>\n

COVER-UP: Following this major problem, the Department of Health and the successive governments were determined not to admit to any other problems in relation to this vaccination.

The British government continued to vaccinate with <\/strong>the two Urabi strain mumps MMR brands<\/strong> between 1988 and 1992, when they stopped using it, even though it had been rescinded by the Canadian government and found to be unsafe. However, the adverse reactions from Urabi were related to meningitis and not inflammatory bowel disease and regressive autism.

The whole weight of the case against Dr. Wakefield is built on discrediting his research. But now we know that Glaxo-Smythe Kline were in major damage control after their MMR vaccine <\/strong>, rejected by the Canadian Government for its bad track record yet <\/strong>approved for use by the British Health Authorities turned out to be tainted with Mumps. This resulted in an outbreak of Meningitis in the UK. They were determined to cover up the potential fallout from the scandal. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ultimately the government would take the blame for its negligence in allowing a toxic vaccine to be knowingly distributed. According to their official contract GSK who be immune from prosecution in the event of adverse effects resulting from the shots.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile Wakefield & his fellow researchers identified a major link between the Gut problems in children who had gotten the MMR shot with an upsurge in cases of Autism. This cast a huge spotlight on GSK & the British Government. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Initially the Lancet was quick to support Dr. Wakefield\u2019s work in 1998. However that was before their Chief Executive Officer stepped down. Enter Sir Crispin Davis who was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Reed Elsevier Group (which owns The Lancet) in September 1999.

Co-incidentally he is also: Non-executive director of GlaxoSmithKline. As managing director he now had the power to simultaneously regulate Lancet policy & GSK strategy from behind the scenes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They will offer instead another direction; and with it enough rabbit holes to keep the Medical Industry profits pouring in for generations to come. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AMONGST REGULATORY AGENCIES COMMONPLACE: 4 out of 12 senior managers at the Irish Medicines Board (IMB) have a pharma background, including a former CEO who worked for a pharma company immediately before and after his time with the IMB. In total, 26% of IMB senior employees have pharma connections. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Conflicts of interest (COIs) appear to be a significant problem within the <\/strong>Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)<\/strong>, where not only are 28% of recent senior MHRA personnel found to have had a relationship with pharma companies, but of the agency\u2019s 63 expert advisors, 48 have personal interests, 32 have non-personal interests, and only 15 had no interests at all. There was a similar pattern amongst the chairs of their various Working Groups, Panels and Experts Advisory Groups. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Within the <\/strong>European Medicines Agency (<\/strong>EMEA), up-to-date declarations of interest are listed for approximately half of their \u2018experts\u2019. 73% of these COIs are considered \u2018high risk\u2019, and yet in 65% of these cases, waivers are granted. A total of 25% of the EMEA Management Board have declared pharma interests.

Wakefield said the council’s ruling against him had been “made from the outset” and vowed to continue his research into the link between vaccines and autism. These parents are not going away<\/a>; the children are not going to go away and I most certainly am not going away,” he said.

‘A now-retracted British study that linked autism to childhood vaccines was an “elaborate fraud” that has done long-lasting damage to public health, a leading medical publication reported Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An investigation published by the British medical journal BMJ concludes the study’s author, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, misrepresented or altered the medical histories of all 12 of the patients whose cases formed the basis of the 1998 study — and that there was “no doubt” Wakefield was responsible.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It’s one thing to have a bad study, a study full of error, and for the authors then to admit that they made errors,” Fiona Godlee, BMJ’s editor-in-chief, told CNN. “But in this case, we have a very different picture of what seems to be a deliberate attempt to create an impression that there was a link by falsifying the data.”

Many peers are speaking out in defence of Wakefield & countering the credibility of journalist Brian Deer – ‘It was not possible for Wakefield or anyone else to falsify the prior clinical records of the children because no one at the Royal Free Hospital London had them nor is it normal practice for them to have had them. So there could be no fraud over \u201caltering\u201d those histories.’<\/strong><\/p>\n

Deer and BMJ fail to make clear that:<\/strong><\/p>\n

* as is common and normal practice those records were not provided to the Royal Free Team<\/strong><\/p>\n

* it is normal practice to take a medical history afresh \u2013 with only the referral letter from a patient\u2019s family doctor setting out relevant prior clinical history.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* a child\u2019s history is taken from accounts given by the parents<\/strong><\/p>\n

* where a history is taken from a parent it common for that parent to be unaware of what a GP may have entered [and probably more importantly, failed to enter] in prior NHS & in other child records and medical notes<\/strong><\/p>\n

* those records and notes [which can be created over years by numerous individuals] may not be reliable \u2013 hence the need to take a clinical history afresh<\/strong><\/p>\n

* the Royal Free diagnoses were made independently and afresh by specialists in their fields who would not rely on prior diagnoses of GPs or others \u2013 for obvious reasons<\/strong><\/p>\n

Further, the Royal Free clinical histories were taken not by Wakefield but by the then world leading gastroenterologist Professor John Walker Smith \u2013 who was also accused and found guilty by the General Medical Council and who is appealing to the English High Court.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over and above all this, as no parent was called by the GMC prosecutor in the GMC hearings [bar the one who thought the evidence was given for the Defendants’ benefit], there has been no opportunity for the parents to answer Mr Deer\u2019s allegations or to challenge what he says nor has there been any proper full examination of these cherry-picked allegations, nor any opportunity for any claims now being made to be subject to cross-examination and independent investigation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Additionally, one of the witnesses in the GMC proceedings against Dr Wakefield writing to the British Medical Journal confirmed the validity of the histopathology on which the paper was based and illustrated how Sunday Times journalist Brian Deer had misrepresented her evidence. On December 20th 1996 a meeting was held at the Wellcome Trust in London. This meeting was an annual gathering of doctors and scientists either collaborating with or guests of my group, The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Study Group, based at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School. For the purpose of this meeting Professor Walker-Smith prepared a presentation on our initial experience of children with developmental disorder and gastrointestinal symptoms \u2013 children who were to become part of THE LANCET 1998 paper. Professor Walker-Smith did so on the basis of his own detailed review of the endoscopic and microscopic findings2 in the intestinal biopsies. The title of his presentation was:

These are the considered findings of one of the world\u2019s leading pediatric gastroenterologists with an unparalleled experience of intestinal pathology in children, and a blinded review by an expert in intestinal pathology. These details were based upon histories and investigation findings that were independent of my input. The findings were faithfully reproduced in THE LANCET paper which was written pursuant to February 1997, at least two months after the meeting at the Wellcome Trust. There was absolutely no fraud. 2002 Vaccine-Autism formal hearings – Medical testimony by Dr. Arthur Krigsman, Dep’t of Pediatrics\/NYU School of Medicine, reinforces Dr. Wakefield’s overall findings: “Okay. So looking at our 43 patients, what are our cumulative results? Well, the percent of patients who have colitis, 65 percent. And by colitis, I mean either active colitis or chronic colitis. There is a difference. Active colitis, 51 percent of the patients have that; chronic colitis, 40 percent. Most patients have both, which is why the overall colitis indicator is 65 percent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A third type of colitis is the osinofilla (ph) colitis, also described by Dr. Wakefield. We have that a seven percent number, very similar to his number. The percentage of patients who had those large nodularities of the ileum, we found to be 90 percent; also very similar to Dr. Wakefield’s. Thirty-five percent of our patients had no form of colitis. However, even though they did not have colitis or inflammation on biopsy, all of them, without exception, had abnormal lymph nodes. So they are not normal, even though there is no colitis.”<\/strong>

2006 North Carolina University study further reinforces Dr. Wakefield’s findings: <\/strong>‘Of the handful of results we have in so far, all are vaccine strain, none are wild measles. This research proves that in the gastrointestinal tract of a number of children who have been diagnosed with regressive autism, there is evidence of measles virus. What it means is that the study done earlier by Dr Wakefield and published in 1998 is CORRECT. If that\u2019s the case, and this live virus is residing in the gastrointestinal tract of some children, and then they have GI inflammation and other problems, it may be related to the MMR.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n
