BREAKING NEWS: Big Pharma quickly moving to encircle the food industry with “Edible Vaccines” aka “Pharmacological Crops”; a serious threat to the anti-vaccine community – Phase 2 Clinical Trials underway
‘Australian scientists are devising a vaccine which can be swallowed in food instead of being injected. Clinical trials led by Dr Barry Marshall have identified certain strains of a stomach bacteria as the basis for edible vaccines. The results mean Dr Marshall and his team will apply for approval to trial their first edible vaccine containing a bug with a flu vaccine attached to it within a year.
For the recent trials, Dr Marshall’s team of 15 scientists at his biotech company Ondek carried out tests on a group of 30 people in Perth. They injected five strains of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, a stomach bug – into five groups of six participants to find out if they would cause any side-effects.
The bugs were collected from elderly people in Sweden who had carried the bugs all their lives but never showed any symptoms. The bugs easily infected the trial participants, who suffered none or only minor side-effects such as occasional stomach upsets. Three of the bug strains lasted longer than three months, while the other two disappeared in the same period. The results suggested the bugs were safe for scientists to attach vaccines to for delivery through the wall of the stomach instead of via a syringe.’

‘Iowa State University researchers are putting flu vaccines into the genetic makeup of corn, which may someday allow pigs and humans to get a flu vaccination simply by eating corn or corn products. “We’re trying to figure out which genes from the swine influenza virus to incorporate into corn so those genes, when expressed, would produce protein. The big question is whether or not these genes will work when given orally through corn. That is the thing we’ve still got to determine.”
According to the researchers, the corn vaccine would also work in humans when they eat corn or even corn flakes, corn chips, tortillas or anything that contains corn, Mr. Harris said. The research is funded by a grant from Iowa State University’s Plant Sciences Institute, and is their Biopharmaceuticals and Bioindustrials Research Initiative.
If the research goes well, the corn vaccine may be possible in five to seven years. In the meantime, the team is trying to expedite the process. “While we’re waiting for Wang to produce the corn, we are starting initial experiments in mice to show that the vaccine might induce an immune response.”

‘The Pentagon’s after a better way to strike back against infectious diseases and bio-threats. Now, a team at Texas A&M may have come up with a way to turn tobacco plants into vaccine-making machines. Darpa, the military’s risk-taking research agency, is investing $40 million into the Texas Plant-Expressed Vaccine Consortium, which will test the tobacco-based method and then offer up 10 million doses of H1N1 vaccines. Once the process has been vetted, the researchers anticipate a scalability that could yield 100 million vaccine doses per month.
Plant-based vaccine production has been in the workings for years now, including the successful creation of edible bananas that protect against the Norwalk virus. Last summer, Darpa requested proposals for plant-based options that would rapidly yield protective antigens for the creation of potent vaccines. Tobacco is a particularly good option, because it’s cheap and grows quickly — yielding vaccines in weeks, rather than the several months required for the standard egg-based method that’s been used since the 1950s.’

BREAKING NEWS: 37 US States have just been awarded a collective settlement of $40.75 million; following formal charges against British Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline. Federal prosecutors allege GSK produced ‘adulterated, or substandard, products made from 2001-04 at a factory in Cidra, Puerto Rico – citing “critical defect” in controlled release Paxil, and other tablets routinely “contaminated with microorganisms”
‘The settlement divides the money among those states and the District of Columbia. They filed complaints against the company under their consumer protection laws following a $750 million criminal and civil settlement with the federal government last October.
Both settlements involve production of adulterated, or substandard, products made from 2001 through 2004 at a factory in Cidra, Puerto Rico. Those included antidepressant Paxil CR — a blockbuster drug that has since gotten generic competition — plus anti-infection ointment Bactroban, sterile anti-nausea medication Kytril and combination Type 2 diabetes pill Avandamet.
The federal criminal complaint alleged that the company did not ensure Kytril and Bactroban weren’t contaminated by microorganisms, that tablets may have contained too much or too little of the active ingredient, and that drugs of different types or strengths were mixed together in bottles.
Another problem cited by federal prosecutors was what GSK called a “critical defect” in controlled-release Paxil, as the two-layer tablets split, potentially preventing the active ingredients from being released slowly or from working at all.
Along with the District of Columbia, states participating in the settlement are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Besides the monetary settlement, Thursday’s agreement prohibits GlaxoSmithKline and SB Pharmco from making any false or misleading claims about any characteristics of their drugs or how they are manufactured.
The case was brought after a company whistleblower reported on conditions in the factory to the Food and Drug Administration. Cheryl Eckard, the company’s global quality assurance manager (awarded $96 million for unfair dismissal), had previously reported numerous violations to her superiors, including a contaminated water system and an air system that allowed for cross-contamination between different products being made there. She said she was fired in 2003 after repeatedly reporting the problems to the company.
“Cutting corners to turn a profit is unacceptable,” Oregon Deputy Attorney General Mary Williams said in a statement.’

Whistleblower Cheryl Eckard sets the facts straight: ‘What Ms. Eckard found when she arrived in Cidra in 2002, according to court documents, were even more problems than those cited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The plant had received complaints that drugs of different types and strengths were being mixed up in the same bottle, and plant managers had made no attempt to issue a recall or correct the cause of the mix-ups, according to a lawsuit Ms. Eckard later filed in federal court in Boston. She learned of one consumer complaint that a boy was given double the dose of the antidepressant Paxil due to such mix-ups, according to her lawyer Neil Getnick. Ms. Eckard made some strong recommendations to her superiors: Stop shipping all products from the plant, suspend manufacturing for two weeks to allow time to resolve the problems, and notify the FDA about the product mix-ups.
But according to her lawsuit, Ms. Eckard’s recommendations were ignored because her supervisors were too busy preparing for an FDA inspection in October 2002 they hoped would clear the way for approval to market two new products, including the diabetes drug Avandamet, which was eventually approved. A Glaxo spokeswoman said two of Ms. Eckard’s superiors cited in her lawsuit, who are still with the company, weren’t available to comment. Others weren’t reachable for comment. Ms. Eckard continued to make trips to Cidra into ’03. She eventually told her boss that “she would not participate in a cover-up of the quality assurance and compliance problems at Cidra,” according to her lawsuit.’

Conflicts of interest in CSL Investigative panel: ‘The Australian revealed last week that two members of the DHA’s Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation are also members of CSL’s vaccine advisory board. ATAGI chairman Terry Nolan, foundation professor of the school of population health at the University of Melbourne and deputy chairman of the research committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council, and ATAGI member Peter Richmond, senior lecturer at the University of Western Australia’s school of paediatrics, have declared their links with CSL, including honorariums from the company, in scientific journals. Nolan also has declared “travel support” from drug companies CSL, Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline to attend scientific meetings to present research findings. In addition to his position on government advisory committees, Nolan supervised CSL’s clinical trial last year of the swine flu vaccine in 400 Australian children.’

Vaccine/Drug Manufacturers shifting operations to capitalize on foreign markets: ‘Swiss drug giant Novartis AG aims to offset patent expiries and the impact of price cuts caused by European austerity measures by expanding in emerging markets, the company’s chief executive said Friday. Novartis Thursday began building a new plant in St. Petersburg as part of its $500 million Russian investment program, which was announced in December. The plant will produce 1.5 billion units a year after becoming operational in 2014.
“There are two things we are doing to offset the patent expiries and austerity measures in Europe: launching new drugs and expanding in emerging markets. That’s why we’re investing so hard in Russia and investing heavily in China, as we can generate significantly better growth rates there than in the West…low double-digit growth–at least 10% and up–in the next five years. Febrile convulsions occur in young children when there is a rapid increase in their body temperature. It affects up to 1 in 20 children between the ages of one and four but can affect children between six months and about five years old.
- The attack often begins with the child losing consciousness, and shortly afterwards the body, legs and arms go stiff.
- The head is thrown backwards and the legs and arms begins to jerk.
- The skin goes pale and may even turn blue briefly.
- The attack ends after a few minutes and the shaking stops. The child goes limp, and then normal colour and consciousness slowly return.
- Some children regain consciousness faster than others.

BREAKING NEWS: European seniors routinely balking at influenza vaccine uptake
‘All but one European country are failing to hit the World Health Organisation (WHO) target of immunising 75% of its older citizens against influenza, the first EU Flu Summit has heard. The WHO set the 75% as a minimum goal in 2003 but only the Netherlands met the target during the 2010/2011 flu season.

The Department of Information and Communications of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has called absurd the statement of ex-Premier Yulia Tymoshenko that she was not involved into the fraudulent procurement of vaccines during a flu outbreak in Ukraine in 2009. “No other than the former prime minister made every effort to conduct the operation, which was recognized by a U.S. court as a fraud which has caused damage to Ukraine,” reads a statement posted on the Web site of the Ukraine’s government on Wednesday. It said that Tymoshenko signed a government decree on granting government guarantees to Ukrvaktsyna.
The report contained Tymoshenko’s statement at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on November 11 2009: “An agreement was reached on the procurement of resuscitation equipment, vaccines against seasonal flu pandemic, an agreement on the purchase of antibiotics. The work has halted for a simple reason: almost eight days passed and the president has not signed the law to allocate UAH 1 billion to fight the epidemic of influenza.”

Oregon State Court Complaint: ‘This action arises from the fraud perpetrated by Defendants Olden Group, LLC (“Olden Group”), a company founded and headquartered in Oregon, and Interfarm, LLC (“lnterfarm”), a Ukrainian company, against the Ukrainian state-owned enterprise Ukrvaktsina. Interfarm and Olden Group conspired to overcharge Ukrvaktsina for millions of dollars in vaccine purchases through acts of fraud, money laundering and other criminal acts. This is not a good idea as it adds further indignities to people who have no jobs and a compulsory system for everyone would be fairer and more effective. ‘Tetanus strain: Tetanus as a clinical entity is linked to a bacteria, Clostridium tetani. Obviously, the germ is not as malicious as one may think because it lives as a harmless commensal in the animal and human intestinal tract (1). It is not the very presence of the bacteria which causes the trouble, but the toxins that are produced by the bacteria under anaerobic conditions, that is, where the bacteria operates in an environment free of oxygen. These toxins can be spread through the blood vessels and finally affect the nervous system causing tetanic muscle contraction and pain. The condition is extremely painful and potentially lethal.
Tetanus morbidity is very low in industrial countries. In the USA, for example, there are only about 50 cases a year (2); in Germany, 17. Mortality figures range between 33% (4) and 20%. The incidence is higher in tropical countries and under poor hygienic conditions. Mortality is 135 times higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. In those countries, tetanus in newborns plays a very important rote. Most of those cases are caused by using dirty, rusty scissors when cutting the umbilical string of the newborn.
General Reactions:
